The Institute is a project of Saint Petersburg State University that aims to improving intercultural communication, disseminate Russian language and culture, and inform foreign youth about education and research in SPbU.
SPbU is the first Russian university
St. Petersburg State University is a scientific and educational center of world significance, one of the largest centers of Russian science and culture, the first university in Russia.
For almost three centuries of the University history thousands of outstanding scientists, public, state and political figures, writers, artists and musicians studied and worked here: Dmitry Mendeleev, Alexander Popov, Ivan Turgenev, Peter Stolypin, Ivan Pavlov, Vasily Dokuchaev, Alexander Blok, Mikhail Vrubel, Mikhail Glinka, Nicholas Roerich, Lev Landau, Leonid Kantorovich, Vladimir Putin, Dmitry Medvedev and others.
St. Petersburg State University was founded in 1724, when the Emperor Peter I issued the “Decree on the Establishment of the Academy …”, which also said about the University: “The University is a collection of scientists who teach young people arts, like philology and jurisprudence, medicine and philosophy, to what extent they have reached”.
Today more than 30 thousand students are being educated at St. Petersburg State University, Nobel and Fields Prize winners work here, more than 15 large laboratories and 26 resource centers are included in the leading Science Park of the country.
The information and library complex of St. Petersburg State University is the best university library in Russia. It consists of great variety of printed volumes, rare books, manuscripts (6.9 million items, including unique collections) and electronic sources (2.4 million records in the electronic catalog, more than 80 million electronic full-text sources, more than 82 thousand titles of electronic magazines and more than 170 thousand titles of electronic books).
