Test of Russian as a Foreign Language

Testing in Russian as a foreign language is based on a certification system for determining the level of proficiency in Russian. It is created according to the purposes of its use, as well as skills and abilities of the speaker.

General Russian, levels

Elementary level (TEL / A1)

If the elementary level test is successfully passed, a corresponding certificate is issued confirming the general knowledge of Russian as a foreign language. It confirms the candidate’s basic skills in a limited number of situations in the everyday, social, cultural and educational spheres of communication. A certificate of this level indicates a necessary and sufficient basis of the Russian language.

Basic level (TBL / A2) (and the basic level for admission to Russian citizenship)

If the basic level test is successfully passed, a corresponding certificate is issued confirming the general knowledge of Russian as a foreign language. It confirms the candidate’s basic skills in the social, social, cultural and educational spheres of communication. A certificate of this level indicates a necessary and sufficient basis of the Russian language. The certificate of  this level is necessary for admission to the citizenship of the Russian Federation.

The first level (TRFL-I / B1)

Upon successful passing of the first level test, a corresponding certificate is issued. It confirms the general knowledge of Russian as a foreign language and the candidate’s skills in the social, social and cultural spheres of communication. This level provides the necessary communication in a language environment (work, study, rest). The certificate of the first level of Russian language proficiency is necessary for foreign applicants to study at a Russian university.

The second level (TRFL-II / B2)

Upon successful passing of the second level test, a corresponding certificate is issued confirming the general knowledge of Russian as a foreign language. It confirms a sufficiently high level of communicative competence. This level allows the candidate to conduct professional activities in Russian as a specialist in the humanities, engineering, and natural sciences. The presence of a second-level certificate of Russian language is necessary for obtaining a bachelor’s and / or master’s degree on the graduation from a Russian university.

The third level (TRFL-III / C1)

Upon successful passing of the third level test, a corresponding certificate is issued confirming the general knowledge of Russian as a foreign language. It confirms a high level of communicative competence in all spheres of communication. This level allows the candidate to conduct professional activities in Russian as a philologist, translator, editor, journalist, and diplomat. The certificate of the third level of Russian language is necessary for obtaining a bachelor’s, specialist’s, master’s and candidate’s degrees in the above specialties.

The fourth level (TRFL-IV / C2)

Upon successful passing of the test of the fourth level, a corresponding certificate is issued. It confirms the general knowledge of Russian as a foreign language to a level of proficiency in Russian, close to the level of the native speaker. The certificate of the fourth level of Russian language is necessary for obtaining a diploma of a specialist and a master of a philologist, candidate of philological sciences, and also a candidate of pedagogical sciences for conducting teaching and research activities in the field of the Russian language.
