SPbU testing for Young Learners

Test for schoolchildren “Russian language in everyday communication” (RLEC) and test for young learners “Assessment of communicative skills” (ACS) are modern tests developed by SPbU on levels A1-C1 for children of compatriots living abroad and for children studying Russian as a foreign language.

The tests are designed according to the needs of the target audience: the tasks contain topics and communication situations typical for children; it makes the passing of the test not only important from a methodological point of view, but also interesting for the children themselves. The tests are developed on the basis of the state testing system for the Russian as a foreign language (TORFL), and also correspond to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Passing such tests and obtaining certificates is a powerful motivating factor in the education of schoolchildren and young learners. Thus, these tests not only provide an opportunity to assess a child’s level of Russian in everyday communication, but also motivate him to personal growth and further study of the Russian language in order to achieve higher results in studies. More than 500 children have already checked their knowledge with the help of this testing system of St. Petersburg State University.

Materials of the tests are developed by specialists of St. Petersburg State University Language Testing Center, successfully working in the field of language assessment since 1997.  Researchers from the Department of Russian as a Foreign Language with more than 65 years of experience in the teaching of the Russian language were involved in the process along with more than 100 teachers. Several times a year, the exam materials are updated and renovated considering the experience of cooperation with representatives of Russian schools from Germany, Greece, Japan, Czech Republic, Norway, Turkey, Finland, Italy, Holland, and Denmark.

Tests have recommendations on age, which, nevertheless, are conditional; however this information will help teachers and students to choose a test of an appropriate level.
